Stuart Simpson began his formal art training at age 11 and six years later began studying with Mary Paige Huey, former student of sculptor, Charles Umlauf, at the Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin, Texas. In 1996, he graduated from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University), in San Marcos with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Later that year, he had the good fortune of meeting Bob Ragan at Texas Carved Stone and worked with him for almost a year prior to opening his own studio, Stuart’s Hand Carved Stone, in 1997. He eventually changed the name to Austin Stone Carving. Simpson is grateful for the opportunities to study world-renowned architectural wonders and stone sculptures. He has traveled to countries like: Cambodia, home to the infamous Angkor Watt ancient temples; Florence, Italy, to view the many great cathedrals and sculptures; Prague, Czech-Republic; and Germany. Simpson's specialties include low relief figurative carvings in all types of limestone.
